If you have a passion for science communication, user-centered design and finding creative solutions to visual problems, the California Science Center is seeking a Graphic Designer to join its Exhibit Development team!


Under the direction of the Graphic & Digital Media Manager, the Graphic Designer is responsible for the design, development, and production of complex graphics, in both print and electronic media, for use in exhibits, wayfinding, and other signage.

As an integral member of our exhibit project teams, the Graphic Designer helps to develop fun, memorable experiences, supporting the Science Center’s mission to stimulate curiosity and inspire science learning in everyone. The Graphic Designer is a key advocate for the guest experience, working with content developers to turn complex ideas into accessible, inclusive, and relatable visual narratives.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • BA degree in graphic design, or other related discipline
  • Minimum 2 years professional experience in a graphic design role
  • Exhibit graphic design experience, and experience integrating 2-D graphics within 3-D designs strongly preferred
  • Comprehensive understanding of the principles, methods, tools, and techniques of graphic design, as well as the skills to apply that knowledge in practice, with an exceptional attention to detail
  • Experience creating original illustrations and infographics is highly desirable; science illustration experience preferred
  • Ability to execute a style guide and maintain brand guidelines
  • Ability to think creatively, solve unstructured problems, engage with new ideas and diverse viewpoints with an open mind, and improve ideas based on constructive feedback from a diverse team of creative partners and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate productively and respectfully with a creative team, and to build productive relationships with internal teams, external stakeholders, and departments throughout an organization
  • Effective time management skills and ability to work independently, with minimal supervision and with competing deadlines
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with a proven ability to express creative ideas verbally and through sketches
  • Fluency in Spanish and/or experience designing bilingual graphics are highly desirable
  • Highly proficient in industry-standard design software, including Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Acrobat); 3-D and CAD experience a plus
  • Proficient in common productivity software, including Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel), Google Workspace, and Slack; experience with project management and digital asset management software is desirable
  • Proficient using and maintaining macOS computers
  • Knowledge of current printing and graphic fabrication methods a plus
  • Experience managing large format printers a plus

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Design signs, banners, didactic panels, and other visual content to support California Science Center exhibits, programs, and operations, strategizing graphic solutions to complex problems based on project objectives and audience
  • Actively participate in exhibit content development as an advocate for the guest experience, collaborating with Curators, Exhibit Developers, and Exhibit Designers to craft fun, memorable experiences that best communicate their science content in support of the exhibit’s educational goals
  • Create original illustrations and infographics for exhibit interpretive panels, turning complex ideas into accessible, inclusive, and relatable visual narratives
  • Manage file conversion, updates, and reprints of existing exhibit graphics
  • Color correct and edit images
  • Communicate with and maintain positive working relationships with vendors and internal stakeholders
  • Coordinate with outside vendors and our in-house Exhibits staff to manage the fabrication and installation of graphics
  • Help manage and maintain the department’s large format printers and scanner
  • Assist with managing and archiving graphic files


  • $60,000 - $65,000 per year
