Animal Collections Safety Technician

 

SUMMARY

The Animal and Collections Safety Technician provides ongoing safety and monitoring of all living and non-living collections areas within the California Science Center, including areas with live animals, animal support areas, pump and mechanical rooms, and exhibits areas.  Duties may include performing security patrols by foot; monitoring, recording and maintaining cameras and security systems; responding to and reporting emergencies according to defined procedures; maintaining daily logs; documenting and reporting of incidents; and assisting with events and guest interactions. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; AA Degree preferred.
  • At least 1-year experience in a security field (preferred).
  • Experience operating and maintaining security camera systems (preferred).
  • Experience interacting with others in a professional setting where courtesy, a positive demeanor and tact are required.
  • Able to understand and verbally explain policies and procedures thoroughly and clearly.
  • Able to speak and articulate clearly for radio and personal communication; must be able to hear communications accurately over the radio and in person.
  • Able to write incident reports clearly and accurately.
  • Able to see with clarity up to 75 feet.
  • Sufficient mobility and strength to patrol assigned areas for up to 6 hours walking, standing, and climbing stairs.  Ability to assist others to evacuate buildings and other areas, including such activities as holding a heavy door open for several minutes at a time.  Ability to sit in one place for up to 6 hours at a time and maintain concentration on video screens.
  • Capable of lifting up to fifty pounds, working in wet/dirty locations, and operating machinery.
  • Ability and commitment to work a varied and flexible schedule including day/night and/or graveyard shifts, weekends, and holidays; to work unscheduled shifts (day/swing/graveyard) when requested (Usually on short notice 24 hours a day, 7 days a week); and overtime as required.
  • Must maintain a reliable form of contact (i.e., cell phone or home phone).
  • Willing and able to work with aquatic/terrestrial animals.
  • Computer proficiency in Word and Excel required.
  • Highly organized with attention to detail.
  • A positive attitude and good communication skills; a team player.
  • Able to exercise good judgment always; have a high level of integrity; be tactful and courteous in dealing with visitors, staff, vendors and others.

 

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs and documents regular inspections of all Living Collections areas; documents conditions, including environment temperatures, physical barriers, pump status, etc.
  • Performs and documents regular inspections of non-living collections areas, including all exhibit and object storage areas.
  • Assists with events as needed to ensure safety of all collections and guests.
  • Assists with securing California Science Center facilities at the end of the day, and with reopening in the morning.
  • Monitor and operate safety cameras and security systems.
  • Observes, detects and immediately reports incidents, safety concerns, damage, and other out-of-normal conditions to designated responders; completes incident reports; maintains ongoing logs of alarms and unusual circumstances; and other documentation as required.
  • Responds to alarms per established guidelines.
  • Assists staff in responding to emergencies, including those involving Living Collections areas.  May assist with the handling of live animals and power equipment.
  • Assists in the evacuation of public, staff, and volunteers, particularly during after-hour events. 
  • Performs administrative duties as required.
  • May assist on-site or off-site staff in diagnosing facilities problems by checking equipment for operation.
  • Maintains a high level of customer service to staff and guests; and high degree of collaboration and cooperation with colleagues in the department.
  • Enforces California Science Center Foundation policies and regulations within guidelines provided, using good judgement and excellent public relations skills.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Salary: $16.00/hour
