Curator Kids Club (CKC), is a hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) program for middle school youth entering 6th - 8th grade. The program targets youth from the underserved communities surrounding the California Science Center, providing quality STEAM learning experiences to youth who might not otherwise have such an opportunity.
CKC members will participate in Design Lab, a 3 week hands-on program where they will discover that engineering is all about solving problems, sharing ideas and improving the world. Members will engage in the engineering design process as they design and build gadgets and structures such as skateboards and robotic arms. CKC youth will also develop skills such as teamwork, communication, critical thinking, creativity and problem solving as they work together to complete engineering challenges. Science Center educators, college student interns, and Community Teen Interns will provide inspiration, supervision and serve as role models for club members.
Members can choose one of the two sessions that are offered during the summer. Applicants must make the commitment to attend the session in which they enroll. Extended hours are available.
Summer 2017 Sessions
Session 1: June 26 - July 14, 2017 (Monday - Friday, 9am - 3pm)
Session 2: July 17 - August 4, 2017 (Monday - Friday, 9am - 3pm)
Goals of the Curator Kids Club: Design Lab
- Provide positive and meaningful experiences with STEAM
- Stimulate a life-long interest in learning
- Help members develop skills such as teamwork, communication, critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving as well as other life skills
- Encourage collaboration with and between families, communities and the Science Center
Curator Kids Club meets these goals by offering engaging, STEAM-rich experiences for youth throughout the summer. Through guided activities and field trips, members explore the world and their own potential. Curators Kids Club also provides parents with opportunities and tools to help inspire, support and develop their youth’s learning. Families are invited on the last day of each session where CKC members will showcase what they have created and learned to their families. More importantly, families are encouraged to continue working with the Science Center throughout the year to participate in STEAM activities and explore the museum by participating in Family Days.
