Fifth Grade Life Science: Grow With the Flow

How do organisms fuel themselves to survive?

Inspire your 5th grade scientists to think deeply about how matter and energy moves among producers, consumers and decomposers as they explore unique ecosystems and organisms on this virtual field trip to the California Science Center. Students will use models and experiment at home to develop an understanding that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water and the energy in animals’ food was once energy from the sun.

Next Generation Science Standards Addressed

5-PS3-1, 5-LS1-1 and 5-LS2-1

Live Virtual Program

Invite animal ambassadors from the California Science Center to visit your classroom virtually to explore how energy moves in an ecosystem.

In this activity, students will germinate a seed in order to generate and record observable data. Students will use this data as evidence to engage in argument about the sources of energy and matter that a plant needs to grow and survive.

Fifth Grade Physical Science: Particle Party

How do particles behave?

Fifth grade scientists will not believe what they are seeing with their very own eyes on this virtual field trip. As they explore the world of particles that are too small to be seen, scientists will learn how to explain and model what’s happening. Science is more than meets the eye.

Next Generation Science Standards Addressed

5-PS1-1 and 5-PS1-4

Live Virtual Program

Invite our educators to visit your classroom virtually to explore air particles and how they behave and find ways to prove that particles are all around us even when we can’t see them!
