California Science & Engineering Fair volunteers will assist the nearly 1000 middle & high school students from throughout California with registration, directions, project transport, display monitoring, and much more. We are in search of volunteers (age 16 & older), in good physical health, to help with this rewarding and memorable event. Fair dates are Monday, April 20th and Tuesday April 21st, volunteer shifts are 3 to 4 hours in length throughout the day and we provide complimentary parking & refreshments.

We offer diverse volunteer positions throughout the California Science Center. 

Special Exhibit volunteers serve as host for the run of the Art of the Brick exhibit. As a Guest Services volunteer you will greet and direct guest, assist inside the exhibit, and educate guest about the Science of the Brick through an interactive area. We are seeking enthusiastic individuals with excellent communication skills to serve as volunteers from February 28, 2020 through September 7, 2020 Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. Must commit to serving 4 hours/week for the run of the exhibit. Training provided.

Guest Services Air and Space Host Volunteers will comprise the Guest Services Air and Space Volunteer Program and serve in the Sketch Air and Space Gallery, the California Story exhibit and in the Samuel Oschin Space Shuttle Endeavour Display Pavilion. Volunteers will welcome guests and provide them with information and facts about displayed air and space artifacts, including Space Shuttle Endeavour. They will engage guests and be readily available to provide assistance and answer questions. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Must commit to serving 4 hours/week for a minimum of 6 months.

Certified Diver Volunteers assist staff with the daily maintenance of our 188,000 gallon kelp tank, feed aquatic exhibit animals and participating in dive shows for guests. The required pre-requisites include a minimum level of Rescue Diver certification from a nationally recognized scuba certification training agency, proof of at least 50 logged dives, current certifications in CPR/FA/O2/AED, the ability to pass a confined water swim and scuba evaluation, and the ability to pass a dive medical examination. Dive certifications are required before you apply. All associated costs to be incurred by prospective volunteer. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Must commit to serving an average of 16 hours per month, or a minimum of 48 hours per quarter for a 1 year period.

Discovery Room Volunteers assist staff in providing interactive activities for children 7 and younger accompanied by their parents/teachers. Activities include crafts, storytelling, interaction with small animals and creative play. Each activity is designed to introduce young children to age-appropriate science themes that mirror the themes carried out in the main exhibit galleries. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. Must commit to serving 4 hours/week for a minimum of 6 months.

Science Center Volunteer

Ecosystem Host Volunteers learn about our plant and animal life and educate guests about them in the exhibit areas and galleries. Position requires excellent oral communication skills. Mandatory Core Training is provided. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. Must commit to serving 4 hours/week for a 6 month period.

Education Presenter – Floor Program Volunteers present Ecosystems educational programs, interactive workshops and demonstrations for school groups and the general public. Assist with conveying the science phenomena presented in the exhibit galleries to guests of all ages with education carts. Background in marine life science/technology, experience handling animals and teaching experience are a plus. Position requires excellent oral communication skills. Mandatory Core Training is provided. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. Must commit to serving 4 hours/week for a 6 month period.

ExploraStore and IMAX Concession Stand Volunteers demonstrate unique gift items, and provide customer assistance to guests visiting our spectacular gift center, the ExploraStore or in the concession area of the IMAX Theater. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. Must commit to serving 4 hours/week for a minimum of 6 months.

Foundation Assistants work in various departments throughout the California Science Center and provide assistance with a range of office duties and projects. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. Must commit to serving 4 hours/week for a minimum of 6 months.

Volunteer Diver

Guest Services Host Volunteers serve as frontline resources for our guests, providing assistance in several areas of the facility including the IMAX Theater and exhibits areas. Mandatory Core Training is provided. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. Must commit to serving 4 hours/week for a minimum of 6 months.

Husbandry Volunteers work behind the scenes to support our fish, reptile, and amphibian collections. Assist with diet preparation, feeding, observation of animal behavior and general exhibit maintenance. Must be willing to get wet and dirty; previous animal handling experience is a plus. Mandatory Core Training is provided. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and must commit to serving 4 hours/week for a 6 month period. Typical shifts are Monday-Sunday from 8:00am to 12:00pm.
